JUNIOR LEAGUE OF WILMINGTON RAISES OVER $34,000 IN 1-DAY EVENT Annual Whale of a Sale Exceeds Fundraising Goal

Wilmington, DE December 2, 2003 Despite tough economic times, the Junior League of Wilmington was able to exceed their goal of raising over $34,000 at the Junior League of Wilmington 23rd Annual Whale of a Sale which was held Saturday, November 8, 2003. “Thousands of community members came out to support this worthwhile cause,” says Junior League of Wilmington President Kate Cowperthwait. This fundraiser requires countless volunteer hours and involves every member of the organization in some way. Each year the Junior League of Wilmington relies on support from local businesses such Emory and Hill Commercial Real Estate for the site donation and Frank Bernard Limited for the donation of 470 new wedding gowns.

With earlier reports of other Junior League’s canceling their annual fundraisers due to increasing costs, decreasing donations and volunteers there was definitely a reason to be concerned. “Many non-profits have seen a significant decrease in contributions and funding. This is not an easy environment to raise money and the Junior League is no exception. With the community and our members support we were able to make this event a success,” says Cowperthwait. “The Junior League of Wilmington has been very supportive of the greater Wilmington community by collaborating with community organizations, addressing the community’s most urgent needs and developing projects and programs that make a difference in the community.”

Proceeds from Whale of a Sale go toward funding the community projects and programs the Junior League of Wilmington supports. This year the Junior League of Wilmington’s primary focus area is on literacy. Current community projects the Junior League supports include partnerships with Friends of the Woodlawn Library, Social Venture Partners Delaware and Delaware Coalition for Literacy. Projects that the Junior League of Wilmington has supported in the past include Child, Inc., Read-Aloud Delaware, Delaware Adolescent Program, Inc. (DAPI) and Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.

Founded in 1918, the Junior League of Wilmington is committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The Junior League of Wilmington is a volunteer organization for woman interested in making an impact in their community. Its purpose is solely educational and charitable. We are part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which makes up 296 Junior Leagues in four countries.
